Graffiti...Is it art or vandalism?

We have had an exciting start to the school year here at JFH. We began our discussions in art with the topic "What is art?" We focused on looking at graffiti that exists in our culture and had some great discussions about whether we believe that graffiti is art or not. In the end, we created our own graffiti on our portfolios which will store each person's art work for the year. At the end of the year, we will have an excellent collection of all the things we have learned and created this year

Welcome Back!

Summer was way too short, I'm sure we'd all agree, but I am happy to back. The first few days of school have been great and I believe that this is going to be an awesome year. I am looking forward to working on our visual jounals this year in art 8. If you have the opportunity check out journalfodderjunkies.com. This site will show you some awesome examples of the things we will be attempting! I had the chance to speak to both the guys who produced this site and they are phenomenal.

Mosaics in progress

Students have been enjoying the process of creating mosaics. We receive most of our stained glass from scraps leftover from Broadway High School stained glass projects. Students are able to create works of art from leftovers! The best part for students is getting to cut the glass and wear the fashionable safety goggles.
Check out our progress.

Celtic Carvings

Students in period 1 have been working on dry wall carvings inspired by ancient Celtic designs. We explored the ancient art of illumination as students were asked to create an original design utilizing one of the initials of their name. Dry wall pieces were saved from last years renovation of the school making this project a very budget friendly endeavor!

The most famous example of illumination comes from Ireland. Do you know what the book is called?

Ukrainian Eggs

Art 8 classes had the opportunity to practice the ancient art form of egg decorating from the Ukraine. Students used tools called kistkas to create elaborate designs with wax. They would then dip into colorful dies, add more wax and repeat the dying process. When totally finished with the design, we burned off the wax using a candle flame to reveal the multi-colored design beneath. The results were amazing! Check out the student examples.

Mosaics!

One of the most anticipated projects of the year has begun at Hillyard. We are making mosaics in 8th grade classes. Students will be using small fragments of glass known as tessarae to create an original design. This is a time intensive project and we hope to be completed with them in 2 weeks. Look for pictures soon!

Still LIfe

Students in 7th grade classes have been comparing and contrasting realistic and abstract art. We drew from observation a "never-ending still life" in both styles of art. For the abstract style of art, we looked at the cubist artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.

Students study Lichtenstein!

File:Roy Lichtenstein.jpgRoy Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was a prominent American pop artist, his work heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. After learning about this Pop artist, students utilized the gridded system of drawing to create 18" x 14" drawings of famous comic book heroes. The results were spectacular... Check out the slide show!
